কক্সবাজারের কুতুবদিয়া উপজেলায় লবণ উৎপাদনের ভরা মৌসুমে লবণের অস্বাভাবিক দরপতনে চাষিরা চরম দিশেহারা হয়ে পড়েছেন। বর্তমানে মাঠে প্রতি মণ লবণ বিক্রি হচ্ছে মাত্র ১৬০ টাকায়, যেখানে জমি লিজ, শ্রমিক এবং পলিথিনসহ প্রতি মণ লবণ উৎপাদনে খরচ হচ্ছে প্রায় ৩০০ টাকা। ফলে, চাষিদের প্রতি মণেই প্রায় ১৪০ টাকা লোকসান গুনতে হচ্ছে, যা তাদের মাথায় বজ্রপাতের মতো আঘাত হেনেছে।

চলতি লবণ মৌসুমে উপজেলার ছয়টি ইউনিয়নে প্রায় সাড়ে চার হাজার লবণ চাষি ছয় হাজার একর জমিতে লবণ চাষ করছেন। গত ২০২৪-২৫ অর্থবছরে লবণের ন্যায্য দাম না পাওয়ায় এবার প্রায় ৫০০ একর জমি পতিত পড়ে আছে। দক্ষিণ ধুরুং ইউনিয়নের লবণ চাষি কামাল জানান, গত মৌসুমে শ্রমিক খরচসহ পুরোThe amount of money lost was about one lakh taka for four kani land. He added that the current season’s bumper production of salt is now being severely impacted by the low prices, which is also affecting Eid shopping. Ali Fakir Dale’s field farmer Chhoton said that traders are paying only 160-70 taka per maund of salt. Last year, after cultivating salt on three kani land, he incurred a loss of 1.5 lakh taka due to low prices. He stressed that despite high production costs, farmers are not receiving the government-fixed price for salt. He urged for fair pricing of salt and an end to salt imports from abroad.

North Dhurung Union’s salt merchant Hosain stated that the prices paid to farmers in the field are based on the prices offered by salt mills in Narayanganj and Khulna. Farmers are receiving 160 to 170 taka per maund of salt in the field, but he fears the price might drop further. He also mentioned that after purchasing salt from the field, an additional 60 taka is added for labor, transportation, and ghat charges, which is uniform across all fields.

Kutubdia-Moheshkhali residents’ primary livelihoods are salt production and fishing. Cox’s Bazar-2 Member of Parliament, Alamgir Mahfuz Ullah Farid, highlighted that the price of salt per kilogram is just above four taka. He recalled that during the interim government’s tenure, there were plans to import salt without ensuring fair prices for the farmers. He assured that he would take initiative in Parliament to form a salt board to ensure that farmers receive fair prices for their produce.
