দেশের শীর্ষ বিদ্যাপীঠ ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের (ঢাবি) উপাচার্য অধ্যাপক ড. নিয়াজ আহমদ খান তাঁর পদ থেকে পদত্যাগ করেছেন। শনিবার দুপুরে তিনি শিক্ষামন্ত্রী আ ন ম এহসানুল হক মিলনের কাছে আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে এই পদত্যাগপত্র জমা দেন। উপাচার্যের প্রটোকল অফিসার মোহাম্মদ ফিরোজ গণমাধ্যমকে বিষয়টি নিশ্চিত করেছেন।
জানা গেছে, অধ্যাপক নিয়াজ আহমদ খান ব্যক্তিগত ও প্রশাসনিক কারণকে তাঁর এই সিদ্ধান্তের পেছনে উল্লেখ করেছেন। তাঁর পদত্যাগপত্র গৃহীত হওয়ার বিষয়টি রাষ্ট্রপতির অনুমোদনের ওপর নির্ভরশীল, যার পর মন্ত্রণালয় থেকে আনুষ্ঠানিক প্রজ্ঞাপন জারি করা হবে এবং পরবর্তী প্রশাসনিক পদক্ষেপ সম্পন্ন হবে।
উল্লেখ্য, অধ্যাপক নিয়াজ আহমদ খান ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উন্নয়ন অধ্যয়ন বিভাগের অধ্যাপক। তিনি ২০২৪ সালের ২৭ আগস্ট উপাচার্যের দায়িত্ব গ্রহণ করেছিলেন। তাঁর এই পদত্যাগের ঘোষণা নতুন করে প্রশাসনিক পরিবর্তনের ইঙ্গিত দিচ্ছে।
এর আগে, গত ১০ ফেব্রুয়ারি অনুষ্ঠিত জাতীয় নির্বাচনের দুদিন পূর্বে এক সংবাদ সম্মেলনে তিনি উপাচার্য পদ থেকে সরে দাঁড়ানোর ইচ্ছা প্রকাশ করেছিলেন।

However, no official notification or gazette has been issued by the ministry regarding the acceptance of the resignation. The process will move forward after the resignation is officially accepted.
Sources from the Ministry of Education indicate that Professor Khan cited personal and administrative reasons for his decision. The final decision regarding his relinquishment of the post will be subject to the President’s approval, as per the established rules.
Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan, who hails from the Department of Development Studies, assumed the role of Vice-Chancellor on August 27, 2024, following a shift in the political landscape after the Awami League government’s formation.
Interestingly, he had expressed his intention to step down from the Vice-Chancellor’s position during a press conference held on February 10, just two days before the general elections.
Born in 1966, Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies from the University of Chittagong. He later obtained a postgraduate diploma in Human Resource Management from the Institute of Personnel Management. His academic pursuits extended to international institutions, where he earned a PhD in Development Studies from the University of Wales, Swansea, in 1996. He further enriched his academic credentials with three post-doctoral degrees from the University of Wales, the Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand, and the University of Oxford.
Prior to his tenure as Vice-Chancellor, Professor Niaz served as the Chairman of the Department of Development Studies at Dhaka University and also held the position of Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Independent University.
His professional career also includes significant contributions to various national and international organizations. He has worked in different capacities for the UNDP, Asian Development Bank, and Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF). Furthermore, he has served as a consultant for the United Nations, World Bank, USAID, and the Bangladesh government on multiple occasions.
