The members of the BNP government took their oaths on Tuesday. In this cabinet, at least seven individuals have become state ministers following the path shown by their fathers.
Anindya Islam Amit, the BNP’s divisional organizing secretary for Khulna, has been elected from the Jessore-3 (Sadar) constituency. This is his first time being elected as a Member of Parliament. He is the son of the late Tariqul Islam, a former standing committee member and minister of the BNP. Like Amit, his father was also elected as an MP from the same seat multiple times. Amit is now carrying forward his father’s political legacy.
In the 13th National Parliament election, Ishraque Hossain, the BNP candidate from Dhaka-6, has been elected, defeating his opponent by a margin of 23,153 votes. Ishraque is the son of the late Sadeq Hossain Khoka, the former mayor of undivided Dhaka and a former vice-chairman of the BNP. Khoka himself was elected as a Member of Parliament from several Dhaka constituencies and had also served as a minister.
In the Natore-1 (Lalpur-Bagatipara) constituency, BNP candidate Farzana Sharmin Putul has been elected with 102,197 votes. This is her first time contesting a parliamentary election. Farzana Sharmin Putul is the daughter of the late former state minister Fazlur Rahman Potol. Putul currently holds the position of joint convener of the Natore District BNP.
In the Chittagong-5 (Hathazari and parts of the city) constituency, BNP candidate Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin has won. He too is participating in his first parliamentary election. He secured 147,054 votes with the ‘ ধানের শীষ’ (paddy sheaf) symbol. He is serving as the assistant organizing secretary of the central BNP. His father, Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin, is a vice-chairman of the BNP and has been elected as a Member of Parliament multiple times under the BNP’s nomination.
In the Faridpur-2 (Nagarkanda-Saltha) constituency, BNP’s ‘ ধানের শীষ’ candidate Shama Obaid Islam has won by a margin of 32,953 votes, securing 120,909 votes. Shama Obaid is the daughter of the late KM Obaidur Rahman, a key organizer of the Liberation War, former secretary-general of the BNP, and former minister. She has been active in politics centered around this constituency for a long time. KM Obaidur Rahman was also elected as a Member of Parliament from this seat multiple times.
Afroza Khan (Rita) from the Manikganj-3 (Sadar and Saturia) constituency will become a minister immediately after becoming a Member of Parliament for the first time. She is the only female Member of Parliament elected from this seat since independence. In the Manikganj-3 constituency, BNP candidate Afroza Khan has won with 167,034 votes. She is a member of the BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council and the convener of the district BNP. She is also the chairperson of the Munnu Group of Industries. Her father, the late industrialist Harunar Rashid Khan Munnu, was a four-time Member of Parliament from Manikganj-2 and Manikganj-3 constituencies and had also served as a minister.
Yasir Khan Chowdhury, who has been elected from the Manikganj-9 seat, is also on the list of state ministers in the new government. His father, Md. Anwarul Hossain Khan Chowdhury, was the Member of Parliament for the same constituency in the 1991 elections. His uncle, Khurram Khan Chowdhury, was a four-time Member of Parliament.
