ফুটবলThe world’s governing body, FIFA, is currently facing a significant debate as its president, Gianni Infantino, has publicly advocated for lifting the four-year ban imposed on Russia from international tournaments. Infantino argues that the sanctions have proven ineffective, leading instead to “frustration and hatred.”

Speaking to Sky Sports, the FIFA chief emphasized the importance of allowing Russian children to participate in football activities across Europe, stating, “No country should ever be denied the opportunity to play football because of the actions of their political leaders.” He further stressed the need for continued dialogue and engagement with Russia.

It is important to recall that Russian clubs and the national team have been suspended from FIFA and UEFA competitions since February 2022, following the invasion of Ukraine.

Infantino’s remarks have drawn sharp criticism. Ukraine’s Minister of Sports, Matvii Bidnyi, has labelled the comments as “irresponsible” and “childish,” asserting that they disconnect football from the grim reality of ongoing child fatalities.

In contrast, UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin has indicated that the resolution of the war in Ukraine is a prerequisite for Russia’s reintegration into international football.

Beyond the Russia issue, Infantino also expressed his support for the decision to award a peace prize to former US President Donald Trump at the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw. He commented, “We should do whatever we can to bring peace to the world, so those who do something can be rewarded.”
