In a somber display of solidarity and protest, students of Khulna University (KU) organized a midnight demonstration and human chain to condemn the tragic death of Mounita Halder, a 21st-batch student from the Law Discipline, who lost her life in a road accident. The protest took place late Monday night at the university’s Hadi Chattar.<\/p>\n
Students from the Law Discipline, along with those from various other departments, participated in the event. They chanted slogans demanding safe roads and urging for the swift apprehension and prosecution of those responsible for the accident. Rezwanul Haque Rad, a fourth-year English Discipline student, expressed the collective grief and frustration, stating, “One after another, lives are being lost in road accidents, yet effective measures are not being taken. We cannot accept such a tragic demise of our fellow student. We demand exemplary punishment for the perpetrators.”<\/p>\n
Safayet Islam Shuvo, a student of Electronics and Communication Engineering, highlighted the pervasive fear of road travel, remarking, “Mounita Apa’s death is not just an accident; it is a reflection of the failures in our road management system. The culprits must be brought to justice swiftly, and effective steps must be taken to restore order on our roads.” Mahbubur Rahman Akash, from the Urban and Regional Planning Discipline, echoed these sentiments, “Today Mounita Apa, tomorrow it could be us\u2014this is the fear we live with daily. We do not want to lose any more classmates this way. Strict measures must be enforced to curb reckless driving, and student safety must be ensured.”<\/p>\n
During the human chain, students submitted a two-point charter of demands to the Khulna City Corporation Commissioner: first, to ensure accountability and punishment for all individuals involved in the accident through a fair investigation within 24 hours; and second, to halt the operation of unlicensed and unfit vehicles within Khulna city. The students also announced plans for another human chain protest on Tuesday at 1 PM to continue their advocacy for road safety.<\/p>\n
The accident occurred around 7:20 PM on Monday in front of the Khulna District Council building.
